Abstract
The tradition of burying people in the settlement was established by the Chalcolithic steppe cultures in northern Kazakhstan and in areas along the Irtysh River (Priirtysh’e). In the settlements Botai, Shiterdy 3, Ust-Narym, Malo-Krasnoyak, Trushnikovo, Shauke 1, and Shidertinskoye 2 inhumation graves were excavated. With that a tradition of “the land of no return” emerged, as imagined in the poetry of the ancient Sumerians, and expressed as inhumations in a residential area. Various factors played a crucial role in establishing this new tradition as the circumstances and the season of the death; a cult of ancestors; the keeping of the spiritual connection with the deceased; the impossibility of a separate burial; the choice of a specific landscape for burial.
