Shortly after its discovery in
1980, the Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) for particles in the
Euclidean plane experienced by a strong magnetic field (and thus
described by a Schrödinger operator) was revealed to be of
topological nature, explaining its stability w.r.t.
perturbations. This description can in principle be carried over
to Dirac operators. However, contrary to the classical situation,
a Hall effect occurs as well for massive Dirac particles in
absence of any external field. We give a physical explanation of
this phenomenon and analyze new connections
with geometry and topology.
